Satanichia Kurumizawa McDowell (胡桃沢・サタニキア・マクドウェル Kurumizawa Satanikia Makudoueru?) or Satania (サターニャ Satānya?) for short is a dimwitted demon who often thinks of petty ways to cause mischief which usually end in failure. She is often pestered by Raphiel, the Dog and Gabriel. Satania is one of the four main characters.
Appearance[]
Satania is generally seen wearing her school uniform. It consists of a short, red and black plaid skirt, a red neck tie with an upside down white cross, dark grey knee high socks with two white stripes at the top of each, a dark grey shirt, brown jacket with five buttons and two pockets (one on each side), and finally brown shoes. A black hairband and black open winged, bat-shaped hair clip can be noticed upon her red hair as well. She has red/pinkish eyes.
In the opening for the anime, Satania is shown in a different outfit while she is a demon. It consists of a long black corset styled dress with fluffy fabric blooming out from below. A few red seam lines on the corset part, and a white chest piece fabric attached to the black lace choker.
Personality[]
Satania's personality appears to come from her family, who are successful bakery owners and carry themselves with pride, viewing their status as higher than that of ordinary people. Her brother is an exception, as he is more rational and realistic. Satania also carries strong pride, which is common for a demon.
Her pride causes problems in the human world, where she becomes socially awkward and lonely. Outside her main group, Satania does not seem to have other friends. Her pride also affects her ability to think rationally, making her naive and easy to fool. Because of this, Raphi can manipulate her with little effort, and Gabriel can outsmart her every time.
Despite these traits, Satania is not evil. She often thinks about how to defeat Gabriel, but she never tries to harm her seriously. Her behavior is influenced by her innocence, which makes her ideas more like harmless pranks than real demonic acts.
As the series continues, it becomes clear that Satania is genuinely kind, similar to her friends. She is loyal and caring, although her pride keeps her from saying it openly. She cares about all of her friends, including Gabriel, whom she sees as a rival. She enjoys Gabriel's company even though they argue often. She also values life, shown when she quickly tries to rescue a dog from being taken to the pound and later adopts him.
Satania is forgiving because of her innocence. Even though Raphi teases her often, she never holds a grudge. After discovering Raphi's weakness, she uses it to bother her but stays friends with her. Her treatment of the dog is another example. Even though he always steals her melon bread, she does not dislike him and is upset when she believes she cannot adopt him. (Unknown to her, Gabriel later helps her adopt the dog.)
Relationships[]
- Gabriel: Satania calls Gabriel her greatest rival in demonic deeds, so they often end up in conflict when they spend time together. Satania believes that by outsmarting Gabriel, she can become the Arch Demon she wants to be. However, because Gabriel is more intelligent and resourceful, Satania's plans always fail. Even so, Satania and Gabriel get along and enjoy each other's company. In the end, both of them acknowledge each other as friends in front of Zelel, and Satania states that she prefers Gabriel as a fallen angel.
- Vigne: Since they are both demons, Satania feels more at ease with Vigne even though Vigne lacks demonic ability. However, Satania's ego and behavior often overwhelm Vigne, which causes Vigne to lose her patience, especially when Gabriel is also involved. Vigne's serious nature and low tolerance for foolish behavior make Satania afraid of her. Even so, Satania sees Vigne as dependable and considers her a good friend.
- Raphi: Like with Gabriel, Satania sees Raphi as a rival because they are a demon and an angel. However, Satania is unable to match Raphi's intelligence, and her pride becomes a weakness that Raphi uses to tease and manipulate her. When Satania discovers Raphi's weakness, she uses it for payback before they return to being friends. At one point, Satania becomes temporarily paranoid around Raphi, fearing that Raphi is planning something, but this fear fades quickly and they remain friends. When the group splits into pairs, Satania often chooses to stay with Raphi, even though she is afraid of her and despite the fact that Raphi is an angel.
Trivia[]
- Satania is taste deaf as is shown in both episode 02 and 03, and as a result can eat seemingly unlimited quantities of spice without feeling its heat. However, she is capable of tasting other taste like salty, as she complained the sea water is salty in episode 04.
- Her name is based on "Satanachia", a powerful demon who is the right-hand of Satan. Ironically, Satanichia is the most abused and often the most undermined in her group.
- Satanichia is a slightly altered name from "Satanachia" which is made to made her name sound more feminine.
- Her family owns a bakery in Hell named "Kurumizawa Bakery" which seems to be quite successful and based on the fact that she came from a middle-upper class family. Because of her family business, it's possibly the reason why she loves melon pan very much.
- Both Angels love to bully Satania, since she is very naive and the Angels are very crafty. However, Gabriel tends to abuse her physically (albeit passively for counter attack purpose) and Raphiel tends to manipulate her (actively tricks her to make Satania as her toy and to an extent, slave).
- Satania is the only character who has a pet both in Hell and Human World, Since she has a pet in her home world, it's most likely the reason why she cared about the dog.
- Satania calls her friends with full name rather than nickname and refers to herself as "Satanichia" not "Satania", this is because of her pride which came from more successful family (except Raphiel).
- In chronological and order of appearance Satania is the last main character to appear in the Anime, because Raphi was already seen during Gab's graduation. While in the Manga, Raphi is the last to appear.
- The only time she has done something remotely devious is when she discovered Raphi's fear of frogs and chased after her with them.
- Episode 8 reveals Satania is quite good at athletics.
